Note*   Nicholas ..Nicholas Smeal (Schmehl) The Schmehl family came to Clearfield Co. about 1798-99, after the death of Nicholas's first wife Elizabeth Volk. They settled near what we know as the old State Road, north of Philipsburg. Nicholas had been a soldier in the American Revolution, serving under the command of Colonel Authur St. Clair. After Nicholas's second marriage, Catherine Kline, they removed to Potter Twp., Centre Co., remaining there until Catherine died. Nicholas then returned to Clearfield Co., making his home with his son Benjamin. He was a carpenter and woodworker. He made wooden forks, spoons, bowls, butter bowls, doughtrays, chairs and the like.
