2. Charles Anderson (ca. 1701/15-Mar-1739)
Assessment Roll, Cumberland Twp.
1876 Atlas of Greene Co, Cumberland Twp.
Harrison Anderson, Civil War Records
Anderson, There are many persons with the surname Anderson. Here we confine research to the "Greene Co.", Pa Andersons. Within Greene Co. there appear to be four separate Anderson "Clans". Fortunately, they seem to be geographically distributed.
The Andersons to the North of the Co., no relationship is apparent.
The Southern Greene Co./Virginia (now W. Va.) Andersons, relationship here is doubtful.
The Central, and Muddy Creek Andersons. Here there are two apparently separate Anderson families. Because they both lived on the Muddy Creek and so close, prior researchers have tended to group them together. However, the only links to the two families have been circumstantial and no actual evidence has been found.
In separating these two groups of Andersons, more detailed analysis of Deeds shows, no association between the two and strong family relationships with the Murdocks and Horners.
1. The Charles Anderson family confines
itself:
1.1. From 1725 in the portion of Baltimore Co. that later became Harford Co.
1.2. In 1778, they relocated to North Side of Muddy Creek, Cumberland Twp. Greene Co. Pa.
1.3. About 1818-1825, most of them relocated to Wetzel Co. Va. (now W. Va.).
1.4. The terms Charles I, Sr. & Jr. are used here for the sole purpose of avoiding confusion. Charles I is only referred to in references as Charles. Later, in Greene Co., Charles Sr. & Jr. are often found referencing the next two generation Charles. Any other Charles is a later descendant.
1.5.
Charles I
(ca1725/15-Mar-1739)
1.6. Charles I purchased property in Baltimore Co. Md., now Harford Co., in 1725. Married Grace Preston 2-Nov-1726 and lived on Swan Creek Run, "Carpenters Plains" until he died 15-Mar-1739. Wife, Grace, then married Thomas Horner. Information from James R. Ewing.
1.7.
Charles Sr. (27-Mar-1734/24-Apr-1821)
1.8. Charles S raised family in Harford Co. Md., commissioned Captain Militia of the Province of Maryland, Harford Co. Company No. 3, in Sep-1775. In 1777/8, Charles I and family removed to North Side of Muddy Creek, Cumberland Twp. now Green Co. Pa., from James R. Ewing. See "Maryland deeds."
1.9.
James (1767/ )
1.10. James (S ) is clearly identified as son of Charles Sr. and husband of Sarah Israel by Luckey and A. Moredock, Sr. It is further known that he was the father of Paracella Anderson Moredock wife of George Moredock. It was earlier suspected that this James married Rachel after the death of his wife Sarah. Closer look at the ages of the families of the two, make this doubtful, but possible.
2. The Upper Muddy Creek Andersons, Southwest of Carmichaels. This group currently begins with the family of James Anderson and wife Rachel Worthington.
2.1. There seems to be a lacking of published information on this family. This combined with the locality similarity with Charles Anderson, above, and the name James perhaps contributed to the confusion. The advantage we have here, is that there exists numerous Original Family Records from James down to fill in the blanks, these records are referenced within this document.
2.2. In separating these two groups of Andersons, more detailed analysis of Deeds shows, no association between the two and strong family relationships with the Worthingtons, Blakers and Longs.
2.3. James (c 1790/19-Mar-1841)
2.4. James (J ) and wife Rachel are clearly identified as the parents of Barnett by Barnett's "Age Book". Topics of controversy are:
2.5. Are the two James's the same person, and if not, who is James's father. About the time that a younger James would have come onto the scene, a James Jr. and James Sr. also begin showing up on the assessment rolls. It appears very likely that James Sr. & James, son of Charles Sr., are the same person. If so, a Jr. most likely is the son of a Sr. and this James fits the generation guidelines for the father of Barnett. We do know from deeds and will, that this James lived and owned property on Muddy Creek
2.6. Who was Rachel? One researcher clams that James (jr.) married Rachel Worthington. Another claims that Daniel, son of Charles Sr. married Rachel Worthington. Daniel died in 1804 and Sarah, wife of James Sr. died early. James (Jr.) & Rachel were mar ca.1813. If so, Rachel had raised two families and two generations, for the oldest son of Daniel & Rachel, Charles, had a family of his own in 1810.
2.7. Elisha Worthington, d. 2-Sep-1836, leaving $20 to his sister Rachel Anderson. This verifies that it certainly is likely that one of the Rachiel's, either Daniel or James, was Rachiel Worthington.
2.8. Marriage record for Harford Co. Md. Daniel Anderson to Rachel Wearin (Worthington?) 29-Feb-1785.
2.9. Until further evidence turns up, the most likely situation is that Rachel Worthington only married James (jr.).
2.10. History of Rock County, Wisconsin, 1889 has a rather substantial article on Martin Dixon, husband of Patients Anderson. This article has sufficient substance to identify Patients Anderson as the daughter of James Anderson and Rachel Worthing, the same parents of Barnett Anderson. Since the article was written in the present tense, it is reasonable to assume that Patents Anderson Dixon knew the maiden name of her mother.
2.11. Barnett (19-Jun-1814/1894)
2.12. Original Anderson papers owned by Helen Husher Lienbauch, were primarily Barnett's. They record all births as well as Harrisons entry into the Union Army. This is further verified through Census data.
2.13. Harrison (19-Sep-1841/29-Apr-1928)
2.14. Harrison was known personally to this generation of descendants of Molly Anderson, daughter of Harrison. Also, in his pension application, Harrison verifies all his children's birth dates as well as marriage and his own parents.
3. Greene Co & WV Andersons - This 'clan' come up from West Virginia, settles on the Wva/Pa border, then up to same proximity as the James Anderson 'clan' then goes back south to WVa.
This is the Anderson group under study in this research document. At present time, the Ancestors of James Anderson are not known.
