Overview

HUSHER/HUSKER/HUFSER/HUSSER thorough early records, sufficient instances of the same person being listed by all spelling variants exist to indicate that any spelling must be examined closely.

Early writings would write a double s (ss) as we would a (fs) today. Therefore, translations of Hufser are actually Husser. Several records of Huber or Hubber appear near the early George Husher suggesting that they may be the same person. They are NOT. See the entries under Somerset Co. Deeds.

Present information deals with three families. While we have not proven the association, there is strong circumstantial evidence to link the three families together. The families are:

Samuel Husher (ca.1798/ca.Oct-1854)

Samuel appears in the 1840, 1850 census for Perry Twp. Fayette Co. Samuel was a Shoemaker and listed his birth place as Maryland. His wife and children are listed as having been born in Penna. When his son Samuel Charles Husher died in 1912, Grandson Charles Jr. listed his father's parents, the elder Samuel & Margaret, as having been born in Somerset Co. Pa.

Samuel is presumed dead at the time of the 1860 census. In October 1854, a Samuel Hofser/Hossler, has entries recorded with the Orphans Court in Fayette Co. While not conclusive, checking the other names listed in his accounts could place this person in Perry Twp. providing more definite identification.

Family of Samuel Husher:

Data pertaining to family of Samuel Husher primarily stems from the 1530 census, and subsequent census records. The death certificate for Samuel Charles and Hanna Catherine are key contributors to identifying this family. The 1880 census for Samuel Charles also significantly ties together some pieces.

David Husher (1826/    )

David shows up on the 1850 census in Jefferson Twp. just a few, less than 5 miles from Samuel. In 1854, a David Hofsler settles the estate for Samuel Hofsler who died intestate. It is likely that this is the same David Husher who resided near Samuel Husher in the 1850 census.

Hiram (1826/     )

Hiram and his family seem to have always resided in the Belle Vernon area. His main tie to Samuel is that he is of the proper age to have been a son, lived within five miles of Samuel, and they were both Shoemakers in 1850.

Sources for the Hiram Husher family are the 1850 census. Sources for Harrison Husher are the 1880 census & 1909 Belle Vernon Directory. Correlation with Dr. Van Voorhis journal could pinpoint exact birth dates for Hiram's family if desired.

Ties with Samuel are suggested by the proximity of their residences, Husher is/was not a common name, and the shoemaker trade. Years of apprenticeship could be expected for Hiram to have been on his own as a 24 year old shoemaker in 1850. In addition, there is the recollection from Mrs. Saunders family that "Hannah had a brother that was a businessman in Bele Vernon", and Mrs. Burt's recollection from the Strawns that "there was a brother Harry".

John Husher (1827/    )

John is placed here solely because Elijah is enumerated with John and his family in 1860. Further, John is of the correct age to be a brother and is living in Elizabeth, the proper place to have been related.

Family of Samuel Charles Husher

Data pertaining to Charles's family is well known by the family presently living. Persons were all personally known and dates taken from cemetery records.

Family of John Nelson Husher

Data pertaining to John Nelson Husher is also well known by the family presently living.

George (ca.1745/1822)

George appears and leaves us in Sommerset Co, Pa. from 1805 to 1822. There is evidence that his children were raised in Allegheny Co. Md. Several of his children then settled around Wood Co. W.Va.

Sources for George (Sr.) are the intestate settlement of his property by his son George (Jr.) & Maryland Marriages 1778-1800. An implicit order of birth was taken from the intestate estate settlement. Sources for George (Jr.) are History of Ritchie Co,, W. Va.
