Barnet Anderson

Note*   Barnet From some papers presently held by Helen Husher Leinbach we are able to draw some inferences that Barnet was a rather meticulous and detailed business person. Barnet maintained a 'Age Book' recording the time of day each of the children were born. In 1839, Barnet drew an agreement with Jeremia Long for William Long to work for Barnet for a period of one year, plus any lost time incurred. 'I promise to pay Barnet Anderson on order the sum of forty five dollars on demand with interest, George (X) Nochols', 1839. 'To me one half days lost time from Phineas Clausins.' Similar entries for services to Benjamin Worthington, David Blaker and Simeon Philips. Several pages of entries of materials for Barrel components and other Farm supplies are detailed. In the early 1840's, there seemed to be a good number of persons leaving Greene Co., Pa. for more rewarding parts of the Country. Illinois, Ohio and West Virginia seemed to provided a draw for many of the families. The Andersons were no exception. Most of Barnet's Brothers and Sisters went West to the Illinois and Iowa area as did the neighboring Roberts family. His brother Simeon wrote to Barnet after arriving at his brother William's home in Peora, Il. telling of how much better the work, wages and farming conditions are. 'I think you all better leave and come here as soon as possible.' His cousin Richard Anderson went down the Ohio River to Ohio & West Virginia. He writes back telling Barnet how good the economy is for Cooper's and Carpenters. He and his Father-In-Law ask Barnet to 'come on down as soon as he can.' For whatever reason, Barnet stayed on in Green Co. until the late 1860's. Then he and some of his children moved across the River to Brownsville. There he worked as a Carpenter for his remaining years.

Note*   Harrison Harrison, 'Harry', served in the Civil War as part of the 140th Regiment, Pa. Volunteers from Washington Co. He enlisted during the Regiments initial establishment in September 1862 and was discharged in 1865. Of the battle of NY River, Spottsylvania, Virginia, General John B. Gordon, CSA, wrote, 'They (Confederates) had been able to load and discharge their rifles three times into the great mass of Union troops, where every shot took effect in the heads or shoulders of the advancing men.' Harrison was wounded that day in the right shoulder. General Gordon went on to say, 'The ground was fought over by the troops charging back and forth for ten hours of that day, and presented a spectacle of horror without parallel.' In a letter to his sister Abigal, Harrison asks, 'tell me sister, who is it that sits at my place at the supper table?', telling us of the tradition surrounding his father's family. After his return from the war, Harrison worked as a Cooper. Harrison and Emma lived in Hopwood, Twilight, and Monessen Pa. While on a trip to Florida, both his wife Emma and a daughter Anna May passed away. After Emma died Harrison removed to St. Cloud, Florida where he died at the home of his daughter.
