| Note* | When Sandy was thirty-two months old, her mom took her to a rehearsal that her father was having with the orchestra for an Industrial Show. Arnie was marking his score with a pencil which he kept in his hand while conducting. One of the actors, Van Johnson, strolled down the aisle, saw Sandy sitting there and, to be friendly, struck up a conversation. He asked Sandy whether she knew what her Daddy does. “He plays shows,” she said. “Do you know what he plays?” asked the actor. “Don’t you know?” she asked in surprise. Then, looking toward where her Daddy stood, she said, “He plays the pencil.” - Alice Brooks Gross. | |

| Note | THE BRASS CANDLESTICKS About the heavy brass candlesticks I use every Friday night: When my Grandmother, Hannah, came to these shores with her husband Abraham Edelman, and two children, she brought some special things with her. I wish I knew more about exactly what was brought here by these young immigrants, but those stories were never told and we can only imagine. I do know, however, that among their possessions were four brass candlesticks. The candlesticks had belonged to my grandmother’s GRANDMOTHER....so you can figure out how old they are likely to be.** When my grandparents, whose name was EDELMAN, purchased the samovar (or if that was one of the items that came with them along with the candlesticks) I do not know. However, when Grandma Hannah died, her daughter, Ethel, kept two of the candle-holders and my Mom took two. My uncle Dave took the samovar. Eventually, I asked my mother whether I could have the brass candlesticks since I was lighting candles almost every Friday night. She was happy to know that I wanted them and since they were purely decorative in her home, it was okay with her. Many years later, while I was polishing the brass, I noticed that the two sticks were not exactly matched. I eventually got in touch with my Aunt and, upon examination, discovered that, indeed, none of the four was an exact duplicate of any of the others. They are handmade, you realize, and that accounts for the slight discrepancy. Sandy has asked whether she may have these candlesticks and I am very happy to know that they will be loved and cared for. Hopefully, she will also be able to pass them on to one of her children someday in the far distant future. **They were probably crafted in the early 1800's. - Alice Brooks Gross. | |

| Note | When Arnie was an infant I sang to him constantly. Most of the time, while I was holding him in my arms and he was about to go to sleep, I'd hum "Jack and Jill" because of the rhythm of the music. When he was a bit over five months old I decided it was time for me to take three or four lessons at driving school so I could get my license. I'd been going out for practice with Irv, but it was not on a steady basis and I wanted to be able to get out on the road. Baby and I went to Grandma and Grandpa Levine's apartment in Brooklyn where I had the crib and everything we needed for a stay of several days, and I was able to go to the local Driving School for final practice. (It only took me three hours which I did in three days.) Late morning of the day I'll never forget, I was a bit rushed to leave and I put the baby into the crib and went to get a bottle for him. I didn't have the time to sing to him or rock him in my arms, but when I went in to check that everything was ok before I left, I couldn't believe what I was watching and hearing. There he was on his tummy, gently rocking and sounding out the rhythm and melody of the first two measures of "his" song! I began to cry and ran to get my mom so that she could assure me I wasn't dreaming. The two of us stood there and watched in disbelief. Nobody ever believed my story, but my mother and I heard and saw it happen. I never saw it happen again. And yes, I was late for my driving lesson that day. - Alice Brooks Gross. | |
| Note* | YOUNG ARNIE I guess I should tell you some things about your fathers, my two sons, when they were little ones. Arnie always was happy when I played radio music, but only if it was WQXR or another of the classical music stations. This started to be obvious when he was about a year old. If I wanted to listen to some popular music, he’d begin to cry! By the time he was about fifteen months old, it was very easy to entertain him. Just put on a recording or turn on the classical music station on the radio. I didn’t often need to ask for baby-sitting help because my mother, who didn’t drive, never thought it a hardship to come to stay with the baby when I had something very important to do. She came from Flatbush in Brooklyn, but the long train ride never fazed her. She loved coming to spend time with her grandson. Until we moved into our own house when Arnie was three years old, there was no place for her to sleep over either, but she was always ready at our call. Grandma Ida, on the other hand, although she loved having a grandchild, didn’t like to be asked to baby-sit despite the fact that she only lived a ten minute car-ride from us. She loved her grandson and her nieces and nephews but cleaning, marketing and cooking were her priorities. One day, when Arnie was about 16 months old, I was in a bind because I had a couple of appointments I had to take care of and it would be easier not to have to take the baby along. Besides, in those days, we never took the children to appointments that didn’t involve them. Grandma Pauline was not able to come and I asked Grandma Ida whether I could bring the baby to her. She said “Of course, but I have a lot of work to do.” I brought Arnie’s food and bottles and got him all set for the day. Grandma Ida said she’d take care of everything, not to worry. I knew that there was nothing to worry about because she loved handling babies....for the whole family. After the mothers came from the hospital with the newborns, they went to stay at Ida and Sam’s house, because that’s what Ida expected. And she took care of the little ones and taught new moms how to bathe and care for their offspring. When I returned from my few hours away, Arnie was sleeping in the crib. Ida told me how wonderful he was. He was so good, not a peep out of him while she was busy with her housework. “He sat in the high chair and listened to the music from the phonograph. I played two concertos for him. One piano and one violin.” I looked at her and said, “And he didn’t move out of the chair all that time?” Now, you must understand, if you don’t already know, that one concerto usually lasts about 45 minutes. Grandma and Grandpa Gross owned a magnificent record player which automatically changed records and held a stack of some eight or more discs. So the baby sat and listened to the music for at least 1 ½ hours or more and never let out a peep! When I went to the refrigerator to get his last bottle, I found two. “Didn’t Arnie want to drink his bottle?” I asked. Ida looked at me and almost began to cry. “I forgot to give it to him,” she said. I assured her that it was all right. He’d eaten his food and had some water and probably was very tired (listening to all that music without moving out of that chair) so she shouldn’t feel badly. But Grandma Ida never forgot that bottle! She talked about it for years. When he was 18 months old, Arnie began “conducting” to the music he heard on the phonograph. He loved listening to the same music over and over. As he grew a little older, we allowed him to handle some of OUR phonograph records. Unfortunately, he began to “read” the grooves in the recordings to find his favorite spots. When he’d find what he wanted, he’d press the needle down a little harder. We had a lot of worn out recordings.....but it was worth it. By the time he was four he was playing his own songs on the piano and asked me to write down some of his music. I guess we could have pushed him a bit, but I didn’t want a genius with all the problems of the overly gifted child. Perhaps I was wrong. But Irving agreed with me. - Alice Brooks Gross. | |
| Note | FAMILY MUSIC SESSIONS When the boys were quite young, Arnie was already playing the piano. Ken was too young to have started any instrument. Irving decided that it would be fun to get the family together to play some music together on a Sunday afternoon. He put some simple music like a minuet on the phonograph, gave an orchestral part for the violin to Grandpa Sam Gross, played the flute part himself, gave Arnie a separate orchestral part to play on the piano, gave me a part to play on the saxophone, and off we went. Kenny was pouting because he had nothing to play. So, I gave him two cardboard cartons, two wooden spoons, and a sheet of the drum or tympani part from the orchestral arrangement. We taught him to follow the beats and the rests and he became part of the “family orchestra”, too. I don’t think he was more than four at the time. We did that for a number of weeks on Sunday afternoons when Irving had the time free, faking our way through “Music Minus One” arrangements.. Ken learned to play the piano. Doesn’t everyone? :-) But it was not until he was forced to spend a lot of time in bed because of too rapid growth after he was thirteen, that Irv asked him what instrument he’d like to be able to play when he returned to school. Ken chose the one instrument that nobody in the family played....trumpet. Arnie was playing oboe by then. I didn’t think Ken was a “trumpet personality” but I was so wrong! Irving had played trombone and flute and could get around on all of the instruments. I played piano and saxophone. So Ken chose trumpet. Ken became the first chair trumpet in the New York City All- Borough Junior High School Orchestra and followed his brother into the New York All-City High School Orchestra. Both sons were first chair in their sections and we were extremely proud of them. - Alice Brooks Gross. | |
| Education* | 1961 | Arnold graduated in 1961 at Forest Hills High School, Forest Hills, Queens Co, NY; Chairman of Music Department asked Arnie to write an arrangement for the orchestra of a Choral selection that the school chorus would be singing at a concert. I asked Arnie how he knew what to write for which instruments and his reply was simple: "I'll look up the range of the instruments in an orchestration book." He had never done anything like this before, but even took into account the ability of various members of the school orchestra. One might consider this the beginning of his career in orchestration. - Alice Brooks Gross.1 |
