Rae was born in a very small town in southern Russia. She does not recall the name or location of the town. She and her mother Bertha left the town in 1912 along with her Mother and 5 other brothers and sisters. The children were born three years apart. Her Father, one sister and one brother left one to two years earlier for America. Rea recalls that she was happy for her father, brother and sister for those were very troubled times for those in the Austrian area, war threats were ever prominent.

Rae’s father Harry was a tailor and found work in Brooklyn. The first goal was the re-uniting of the family. This he accomplished in 1912, sending home not only the required funds for the trip, but the pre-purchase of the Steamship ticket. Rae recalls that they were very happy to see their father, brother and sister again. They boarded the ship and proceeded to the third class area with numerous other passengers. They were then called to a higher level of the ship and taken to a first class stateroom. The ship was then moving and the ships personnel took that family into the stateroom. It was elegant with crystal all around. ‘Mother was very frightened, all this elegance and the ship was moving to sea. Mother kept insisting, “This is a mistake”, but no, they kept assuring her that this is what the ticket called for.”

Rae recalls that they first lived in Brighton, but her daughter said that they lived first in Williamsburg. Harry worked in a Tailor shop at that location. The children immediately enrolled in school. English was hard to learn, but Rae felt that they learned rapidly. They took a few words home each day to teach the rest of the family, but mother, Bertha, did not care to learn.

At a later point in her life, Rae has a breast operation and the Dr. felt that a warmer climate would be best for her recovery. They moved to Florida, where they lived for 10 years. It was very nice there, much nicer than it is today. They returned from Florida and went to live ?with/near? her daughter Esse.

In her 98th year, Rae recalls her life and past quite well, and at her convenience. She feels that there is little for her to do but watch Television. She is quite well conversant with today’s current events and speaks quite emphatically regarding her viewpoint in the change of events she perceives. She speaks of, “when your mate dies, there is little to live for.” Then she interrupts to take care of her GgrandSon on his birthday. It is obvious that they have a rapport and get along quite well.
