| Note* | YOUNG KEN Ken was a devil from the time he was very little. If there was mischief afoot, he was probably part of it. He had a glint in his eye (see picture of him at the phonograph when he was two years old) which told you that he was looking for something to do that might cause some concern for his safety. All the neighbors in the Crescents area of Rego Park (where we lived) knew that they could count on seeing me or my mother out looking for Kenny when he was just a little three year old. He managed to find a way to get out of the fenced-in back yard area no matter what we did to try to contain him. In desperation, I took to tying him to a long piece of clothesline so he had the full area of the back garden in which to play, but unless somebody was there to watch him, he’d manage to open the gate and go wandering around the neighborhood. One day, while Grandma Paul was at the house and I was out on errands, Ken disappeared from the back yard. Poor Grandma. She looked out, saw that he was gone and she went out looking for him and calling his name all around the neighborhood. She didn’t find him at anybody’s house. Nobody had seen him. She was ready to call the police when she passed a nearby excavation for a new home. She tried calling his name and sure enough, there was a small voice answer. She went closer and looked over the edge.......and there was Kenny down a couple of feet below the edge of the excavation! She couldn’t reach down to get him except by lying down on the ground, face-down, and reaching her arms down to the child below. Then she yanked him up! No, he wasn’t spanked. He was cried over. By that time, he cried too, because he was frightened, I guess. But that didn’t stop him from wandering the neighborhood whenever he found the opportunity. - Alice Brooks Gross. | |
| Note | FAMILY MUSIC SESSIONS When the boys were quite young, Arnie was already playing the piano. Ken was too young to have started any instrument. Irving decided that it would be fun to get the family together to play some music together on a Sunday afternoon. He put some simple music like a minuet on the phonograph, gave an orchestral part for the violin to Grandpa Sam Gross, played the flute part himself, gave Arnie a separate orchestral part to play on the piano, gave me a part to play on the saxophone, and off we went. Kenny was pouting because he had nothing to play. So, I gave him two cardboard cartons, two wooden spoons, and a sheet of the drum or tympani part from the orchestral arrangement. We taught him to follow the beats and the rests and he became part of the “family orchestra”, too. I don’t think he was more than four at the time. We did that for a number of weeks on Sunday afternoons when Irving had the time free, faking our way through “Music Minus One” arrangements.. Ken learned to play the piano. Doesn’t everyone? :-) But it was not until he was forced to spend a lot of time in bed because of too rapid growth after he was thirteen, that Irv asked him what instrument he’d like to be able to play when he returned to school. Ken chose the one instrument that nobody in the family played....trumpet. Arnie was playing oboe by then. I didn’t think Ken was a “trumpet personality” but I was so wrong! Irving had played trombone and flute and could get around on all of the instruments. I played piano and saxophone. So Ken chose trumpet. Ken became the first chair trumpet in the New York City All- Borough Junior High School Orchestra and followed his brother into the New York All-City High School Orchestra. Both sons were first chair in their sections and we were extremely proud of them. - Alice Brooks Gross. | |

| Note* | When Ken and the children came to live with Grandma and Grandpa, the baby was 10 months old and Andrea was 5 ½ . Andrea was very emotionally tense and unhappy, but wouldn’t talk about her confusion or unhappiness. Two of the outlets Grandma worked out for her were playing the piano and painting. We often put pictures on the music rack of the piano and let her play what she saw in the pictures. Sometimes we let her “play” what she had painted. The anger and fear were easy to hear when she played her dark, disturbing paintings. Eventually, we got lighter, happier pictures and the difference was amazing. Andi and Grandma also spent a lot of time “singing opera”. Whatever we had to say to each other was sung, no matter how ordinary the statement might be. It was a wonderful experience for both of us and one which we both remember to this day. From the time she was quite little, Andi loved to sing, act and dance. She made up “plays” which she and her cousins and sister would perform and we all had great fun watching the way the girls developed their imagination and a good sense of telling a story. - Alice Brooks Gross. | |

| Note* | Perhaps of all the mini stories about the grandchildren, this one about Marcy at age 20 months or so, is my favorite. Marcy was seated in her combination table and high chair in the breakfast room of our home in Hollis Hills, and I was at the stove. She pointed to the wallpaper and said “peanuts.” I didn’t understand what she was trying to say to me. The more I asked, the more frustrated I became. The wallpaper was a white ground on which were large floral prints in various sizes and shapes in shades of cream, tan and brown. Finally, I picked her up out of the chair and took her close enough to the wall so that she could put her hand on the paper. I asked her to show me where the peanuts were. She reached out and put her hand on an inverted bud and said, once again, “peanuts”. As I stared at the paper, it suddenly dawned on me that Ken had been taking the kids into the shower with him and her first life-class was from a different viewpoint than ours might be. - Alice Brooks Gross. | |
