One day when Ken had been baby-sitting all the kids, he came home with a story that made us very aware of how angry and frustrated she was at the change in her young life after her baby brother came on the scene. During the afternoon, she invited Marcy to go in to play “hit the baby”. She was four-and-a-half, Marcy two years younger and Daniel only 18 months.

Note* Daniel We thought we were only destined to have grand-daughters, so imagine how delighted we were when Naomi and Ken married and brought a grandson into the family! Dan was an artistic and athletic boy from the time he was very little. I have never told anyone about hearing him and a couple of friends, (one other boy and one girl) who used to run down the sloped driveway below my bedroom windows in the apartment house where we lived on 18th Avenue in Bayside. I don’t remember how old he was the first time I heard his “gang” using all the forbidden words that I was sure weren’t part of his vocabulary around his house. Perhaps he was eight. The thing that drew my attention to their ‘game’ was the fact that they were trying to outshout each other with these words that were giving them a feeling of rebellion, and there I was above their heads....listening to their screams. The first time it happened, I thought they were fighting and was listening to see if Dan needed protection from his older playmates. After that, I only looked down at them to check that they were being involved in a game of one-upsmanship and nothing more. When the noise abated I left my “lookout” perch above the driveway. You’ve heard me talk about my Cousin Lucille. We were very close cousins, especially since I lived with her family for so long. She was a very sweet child, quite beautiful and always smiling and properly behaved. HOWEVER, she had a nasty habit of pinching people. She and I used to share a bed part of the time I lived in her home and I can still remember being hurt by those pinches. She took a very tiny portion of skin and twisted it as she pinched, resulting in a scream or yelp from the victim.
One afternoon, my father’s mother (Grandma Brotsky) came to visit my Aunt Rose and Uncle Simon. I presume it was to thank them for their kindness toward me and to visit me as well. She was introduced to the Grosoff children in the usual manner when a visitor comes, whether family or stranger. Mildred, my older cousin who was six years my senior, played the piano for her and Lucille just smiled and looked sweetly into her face. At one point, Lucille moved closer to my Grandmother Anna and Grandma smiled at her and put an arm around her in a little hug. While talking to my Aunt, there was a sudden gasp and little shriek from my Grandma Anna. It was Lucille at her favorite game. Of course she was reprimanded and banished from the room, but nothing seemed to stop the nasty habit until she was a bit older. I, unfortunately, was the one who suffered the most from that problem. In fact, I think that was finally the reason we were put into separate rooms. - Alice Gross Brooks.

I know that I mentioned my grandmother Hannah’s ability with sewing and designing clothing and I know that I noted the fact that she taught her eldest daughter, Rose, how to sew. Aunt Rose used the sewing machine and the needle equally efficiently. One summer, both Lucille and I were outfitted with a wardrobe of eight dresses in different pastel colors, The dresses were sleeveless with ties at the shoulders and large pockets on each side just below the waist. I can almost see them now! The material was soft and silky in vertical self stripes but the thing both of us loved was the stitching around the ties and pockets. The stitching on each dress was done in heavy black velvet-like thread, and outlined a bunny-rabbit on each pocket and on each shoulder tie.
We took those dresses to a hotel as a basic wardrobe that summer and never wore the same color at the same time until a lady said something to my aunt about how smart it was to be able to have both girls wear the same dress even though they were not the same size (being two years apart)! That very same evening, Lu and I wore the lavender bunny dresses at the same time and my aunt was satisfied that the gossip was put in her place! - Alice Brooks Gross.
