Mort/Martz sufficient evidence exists to suggest that there probably are additional spelling variants, ie:MARTZ. No ties have been found as yet supporting this.
Little is know of this generation. There is strong evidence to support that this William had at least two children, William and Margaret Elizabeth. Both their death certificates give their fathers name as William. Margaret's death certificate lists her mother's name as Susan Wetzel.
Where as the exact year of Williams birth is not certain, 1832 is the most likely candidate, any error is likely not to be more than one year. William and his family were well known to the children of John Emory Mort. Other facts were gleamed from census data and Civil War Pension records.
John and his family are well known to this generation.
note: William (Billy) Mort was visiting his niece Elsie (Alice) Myers in York when he died.
note: adopted by Thomas and Ida.
note: Bettye Smith was correspondent for Minnie Smith.

note: Minnie Schrenker is the source of the John Smith & Margaret E. Mort Connection.

From a letter May 19, 1948 from Aunt Emma to Vera.
"Regarding Uncle John, Here is all the information Mother can give. He was born in Carroll County and was baptized when he was about two years old at home. The Methodist Minister came right to Grandpa's house which was at the crossroads between Keysville and Pike Creek. The Minister, she thinks his name was Funk, preached at three places, Creagerstown, Keysville and Middleburg. The church in Keysville was used by the Methodists, Reform and Lutherns built new churches and I guess the Methodists stayed there. I don't believe you will find any record."
From the pastor of Tom's Creek and Emmitsburg Methodist Church, James Farmer, Emittsburg.
The records for Toms Creek start in 1867. The Pastor in 1867 covered Thurmont, Lewistown, Catoctin, Emmitsburg and the Toms Creek Schoolhouse. In 1904, the Methodists bought the Lutheran Church.
