Note*   William Mort William Mort was commonly referred to as 'Bill' or 'Billy' by those who knew him personally. Edgar Grimes told of an instance that gave him the nickname 'fighting Billy'. A fellow, listening to 'Bill' tell a story once said to him, 'Old man, I think you are Bughouse'. Bill said, 'Young man, don't you repeat that'. The man did and 'Bill' hit him over the head with his cane. Bill served in Co. I, 3rd Calvary of the Maryland Volunteers ('The Bradford Dragoons') from Sept. 1, 1863 to June 5, 1865. This unit was in the Southern Campaign in Louisiana, Mississippi, Florida and in Mobile, Alabama under General Canby. William received a medical discharge from the Army and was awarded a pension in 1878. After his military service, William and Mary farmed in the Emmitsburg, Motter's Station and Keysville area. After Mary died, and the children were on their own, William spent his winters with his daughter, Rosa Reifsnider in the Pikesville and Baltimore area. In the summer, William Mort would go west to Iowa and visit his sons John Emory and George. In June of 1913, William went to York to visit his niece Alice 'Elsie' Myers before going to Iowa. He died in the York Hospital from Blood Poisoning.

The geographical proximity is the same and there is some indication that this might be the group to which William Mort & Mary Cain belong. 1) Charlie Welty recalled that, 'William Mort had a brother Baltzer and a nephew Frank from Woodsboro.' 2) The Margaret Mort in this family is of a near age to William Mort's sister. 3) The William Mort in this family is of a near age to William Mort, husband of Mary Cain. 4) There are enough discrepancies in the exact ages of both William and Margaret to allow them to fit into this family.
