Because the listings vary in content by Census, the content is not always the same. For the most part, I hope the content will be obvious. Some of the unique items are as follows:

POS - This is the relative position of the entry within a household. Ie: The head of the household is always 1. Should there be a 0 in that position, then that record is an Index Record and the remaining household members have not yet been transcribed. However, you now know the index of the enumeration and you can more easily find the record. If you don't have the Census microfilm, you can email me, and chances are pretty good that I will get it for somewhat soon.

SEX - Is missing in many cases. That is probably obvious.

RELATE - Relationship not show up until the 1880 Census.

Where_Born - If missing, it is PA. On later Census, there were three places given. The principle and the Principle's Parents

For best Results

  1. Look in the About These Census Listings to see if your Surname is even here.
  2. Go to the Composite Listing first. The same Records are in both the Composite and Census Listings. Only the Composite is sorted by Last Name, First Name and then Location. You should see your person there for each year that they are transcribed, there age, and the Census Year and location.
  3. Then go to the Census By Year, use the Find Switch, usually under the Edit PullDown to locate your household
  4. Have Fun.
